For The 12 Year-Old Girl In All Of Us

Behold: Malibu Musk
When I was 12 or 13 my best friend, Kristen, and I would lay our tops and jackets down on the bed and spray them down with this stuff before going to the mall. I saw it a couple months ago in a drugstore back home, but I had a bad head cold and was in a hurry. I hadn't seen it in well over a decade, so it was a nice surprise. It hasn't changed one bit either--it looks exactly the same as it did back then. When I found it again at a drugstore here in Sedona, I couldn't resist trying a spritz for nostalgia's sake. And wow--what a flashback! It's like pineapple and musk. Really not that bad, but definitely an adolescent's perfume. I mean... it comes in an aerosol can and smells like musky candy! In any case, the next time I come across it I have a feeling I'll be taking a can home to spray all over my best friend's and my jackets before we go out to the bars. Is that so wrong? Lol...
Did you have a "training" perfume? What was it?

I love this post! Scents create such strong mental impressions on me. I love how it looks so nineties. haha…

Oh man. I totally did. The first perfume I had was this body spray that smelled *exactly* like fresh-baked cookies. So much like them that teachers would get angry because they thought someone had food in their classroom.
Ex-cla-mation!
mermaid – Earrrly 90′s–check it out!!
Anna – Hah! Vanilla something, huh?
Sunny – I wore that too! Hahaha…
My older sister used to love that stuff. Me? I personally abused Elizabeth Arden, Sunflowers and Gap Dreams. Oh my goodness, even when I smell “Dreams” now, it makes me feel awkward and thirteen again.
Annie omgosh thank you for posting that advertisement!!! that is hilarious!! oh and i forgot to mention my “training” perfume. my grandmother has this fancy antique tray filled with probably 2 dozen perfumes. I would sneak into her bathroom and go to her vanity. I used to try different perfumes on and make up a story of who i was and why i wore that scent. (this was when i was like
when i was 11someone gave me a sample of the Lucky You perfume, which i wore religiously throughout junior high. mostly i just kept getting and collecting samples, but then i got my very own bottle – which i spritzed down to nothing in probably a month.
Oh – that smiley should have been the number 8… i guess it got confused cause of the parentheses.
That’s very sweet! Somethings just don’t change.
I never used any when I was growing up. That kind stuff I only saw in magazines..
Aja – I remember Sunflowers! ha
mermaid – Hehe, I like it better saying it’s when you were like
cool. Lol, cute story too, thanks!
songy – I don’t think you missed out! It’s mostly swill. ;D
In Australia we had this spray deodorant stuff called Impulse (it still exists in different fragrances) which we used to spray all over ourselves, and we also used to have Impulse fights in the bathrooms at school. If you got caught in the crossfire you’d stink to high heaven of the most headache inducing perfume smell ever. We thought/hoped it made us irresistable to boys. Hah!
I remember one cheapie purfume that every girl went crazy over during high school – it was called Fetish. It came in some sort of funky bottle but we all loved it. I remember my sister telling me when she was in high school it was all about the old yardley scents – she bought Nights in White Satin after the Moody Blues tune hehe.
oh gosh … mine would have to be this little designer rip off range, i used one and the by line was ‘if you like this you’ll love clinique happy’ or something like that.
Wow, I love finding things like this, my first “perfume” was Vanilla Musk by Impulse,
It’s been discontinued now which makes me sad.
Thats so funny, I love to find things from when I was young(er)!
Lol, these are so funny! I love how we all sprayed these cheapy scents all over ourselves! Moderation, what? Training perfume was all about going big
Aw, thanks.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, Annie!
xx
OMG!
what a flashback that bottle image was!
thats tooo funny! great packaging.. i’m surprised it hasn’t change since back in the day!
i remember that lipgloss in the rectangular slide-y lid thing… i wonder if you can still get that…
xo

OMG I LOVED this stuff growing up. Same with Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth perfume.
Thanks for the flashback – I love this stuff.
Nostalgia, love it! Also, referring to one of your previous comments, I tried a sub today and it was suprisingly nice!
I definitely overused Bath and Bodyworks’ body sprays! Not quite perfumes, but they definitely functioned as training perfume. I remember being introduced to their products for the first time when I got a bunch as Christmas presents when I was 10 or 11 (that’s the kind of thing you’re supposed to give pre-teen girls, right?)
I’m glad I’ve moved on, but the smell of B&B’s cloying gardenia will always have a special place in my heart!
(Also! I love the design of Malibu Musk’s bottle! So very 80s Barbie! And good for them for holding onto the same pattern!)
everyone at school was into the impulse body spray, BIG TIME. I particularly liked ‘Incense’, I guess cause it was so different to all the others. It’s funny cause I don’t really like oriental perfumes now!
I also loved ‘Ananya’ from the Body Shop and I think I would still love it if they hadn’t discontinued the line.. : (
darling Annie, love this post.Never come across this spray when i was younger.maybe its an american one but the way your wrote the post made me nostalgic for the aerosols of my teens!
lovely post.i wore charlie red as a teenager ;o)
big kiss,
marian
yes! my best friend and I got “CK one” knockoff body sprays from claire’s, it was also in an aerosol can! we also both bought CK one imitation gift sets for out boyfriends for xmas. what a time it was!
oh yeah, i should add Clinique Happy, i hate it now! that best friend i had loved sunflowers, but I never like it!
I think every girl has had their equivalent of this stuff…for me it was those cheap sprays that smelled like gummy bears!
LOL, that’s so cute
My ”training” scent was Davidoff’s ‘Cool Water For Women’.. whenever I smell it I’m instantly taken back to memories of parties, mischief and underage drinking! :p
Oh for sure – Charlie all the way, baby.
I used Sweet Honesty for years until I got sick of it. Now I don’t really use anything. But I found it avon again…maybe a second try is in the future??

Oh wow… I haven’t seen a bottle of this in ages!
Happy New Year!

hahahaaa! annie, love this!! x
This post has rocked my socks Annie. My training perfume was a Designer-Imposter Ralph Lauren number, and then a bottle of Hermes Calche I found in a garage sale, which I still have a tiny vial of.
Malibu Musk sounds awesome.
Xx
Oh that’s awesome! I remember the days of Cool Waters- the stuff churns my stomach now, but in middle school i thought it was dreamy.
I can remember a few….a B & BW daffodil fields spray…. then something called Jovan White Musk I think? I definitely had a bottle of Love’s Baby Soft, but I don’t think that I ever wore it. I also really liked one of the Olsen twins perfumes…it smelled like peaches.
I totally was wrinkling my nose whilst typing that! My taste in scents has changed so much!!
hot damn I have not seen that bottle since jr high, totally brought back memories:)
I totally used this when I was in jr. high.. hilariously amazing
OH MY GOD
I wore this when I was 9!!!
I even got the Palm Tree shaped bottle one Christmas!!!
I had completely forgotten about it until now. Thank you so much for blogging about it. Do they still make it? If they do I will hunt out a bottle.
