Melamine is an incredibly lightweight and durable form of plastic popularized in the 1950s. It's is especially good for children because it can be made in a variety of different colors and can feature cartoon characters. The only problem is that it tends to scratch and stain fairly easily. Nevertheless, melamine dishes have been enjoying a comeback as a retro kitchen item. My favorite melamine dishware are the styles with confetti designs: multicolor speckles on a solid background, reminiscent of confetti gift-wrapping tissue and cupcakes with sprinkles.
