We had shag carpet in the house I grew up in. Oh yeah! I remember it well. Brown shag in the living room, awesomely bad orange shag in my brother's room, and blue shag in my sister's. (I had hardwood in my bedroom.) Then in grad school I bought a big round shag area rug. It was bright teal and made little blue dust bunnies. It kind of looked like a muppet-skin rug, lol... I gave it to my favorite neighbor when I moved, because he liked it and my new place had carpet. For some reason, there's a big difference between shag carpet and shag rugs. Shag carpet went out of style in the late 70's/early 80's, but shag rugs haven't stopped being cool since their introduction (in--I'm guessing--some primitive hut)! What a classic. Shag rugs are simultaneously retro-chic and modern, an oxymoron. They say, "Zen," and, "cozy," and, "Have a martini, baby," all in the same breath. And may I also say, it's no coincidence that shag is a slang word for you-know-what (and if you don't know, then guess)... shag rugs are sexy! You can find a lot of them on eBay in all sorts of sizes and colors.
