Interior Design Ideas Inspired By Mad Men

If you haven't been watching Mad Men and you have any sort of fondness for being entertained, then you've been missing out. The show is about a fictional advertising agency in Manhattan circa 1960 - 1962, and the drama that goes on around its executives and copywriters. It comes from the writer and executive producer of HBO's The Sopranos, so you know it's good. In fact, it was just nominated for 16 Emmy Awards this year. It's on AMC Sunday nights at 10/9, but you should probably catch up to the first season on DVD before diving in.

One of my favorite things about Mad Men is the mid-century modern design. I'm always spying certain objects in the background that suit my vintage aesthetic. Let me show you what I mean--I've grabbed a few screenshots and tracked down some similar items to steal Mad Men's Eames era style.

What you have here is some sexual harassment going on in the foreground, and an interesting sitting area in the background.

You know the orange planter in this next scene caught my eye. I found a vintage planter in a similar hue on eBay, and also a vase for those who don't care for house plants. And for a more feminine approach to the brandy set, I've included a colorful set of brandy glasses.

I've composed a dining area based on this scene depicting an office meeting. One thing I really love about Mad Men is the abstract expressionist art on the office walls. My dad is an artist who was studying during the time this show was set, and these paintings look very much like some of his! It really knocks me out. Here I've substituted a piece found on Etsy.

Mad Men doesn't just stay in the office, it also follows some characters home. I love the velvet headboard and overall shabby chic look of this bedroom.

I have never had cable so I hadn’t heard of this show, but it looks cool. Thanks for posting about it and I will have to rent season 1 because I love interiors from that era.

Lovely! I would love to have a house decorated in that sort of an aesthetic. I am so excited about moving in October and the prospect of having a new space to decorate- I’m thinking I’m going to do the whole Brian Kinney - Queer As Folk - Budoir thing. Dark wood, black leather and a crystal decanter!
