American Psycho

I've been reading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. You may have seen the movie with Christian Bale (who is sooo freaking unbelievably hot by the way). The book is amazing. Genius. And somehow, about 100x more brutal and violent than the film if you can imagine that (don't--it's gross), in fact, it's absolutely unreadable in some sections, and that's coming from someone who read A Clockwork Orange 3 times in high school and loved every bit of it. Anyway, in the book, Patrick Bateman, the main character, the psycho, describes everyone's outfits in great detail--the fabric, the designer... everything. The joke is that he studies fashion so obsessively (in order to "fit in!") that he has all the designer's items memorized and is able to recognize them immediately. It's impressive. Ellis keeps up with it too. Almost every character new to a scene gets the "What Am I Wearing?" treatment, like girls do in blogs these days. The book is set in the 80's, and it's amazing how Ellis captures the young yuppie culture. I'd recommend the book if it weren't so violent! If you can stomach it, the non-violent parts are incredible.
