DIY Shredded Boots Tutorial

This is a tutorial for how to make shredded boots--not a shredded shirt, not shredded tights or jeans--boots. I've had this old pair of Aerosole go-go boots for years and I don't remember the last time I've worn them. They're classic and fit well, are comfortable, but are so boring. Why not rip them to shreds?

If you don't have a pair of neglected go-go boots to shred, you can find them fairly easily and cheap. They are many pairs on eBay (click!), or you may want to keep an eye out for them at your local thrift stores.

I started by stabilizing mine with duct tape. I took a small piece and taped the front top to the back (or side to side, whatever, it's relative). I did this just to try and keep things straight.

The most important thing is you need to cut a small snip on the folded corner of the boot.

You will insert the scissors in the hole and cut one layer of the boot at a time. This is very important. Do not try to cut the front and back of the boot at the same time. Cut the boot 3/4 of the way around. With my boot, there was a thick seam that made a good stopping point. (By the way, how do you like that brown shag carpet?)

When you finish, the boot should look something like this:

If you want the boot to look like fish gills (which is not necessarily a bad thing), then you could stop there, but we want the slashes to be more pronounced. Snip off every other shred.

Then you should have achieved the stripe effect of these shredded boots. Ta! Your boring boots are now cool and interesting! :) Here is a back view showing how we only cut 3/4 of the way:

And here are the boots in an outfit:

  • Wet Seal bright blue tights
  • DIY shredded boots!
  • If you try this yourself, let me know, I'd love to see how your boots come out. :)

    39. Why not shredded boots. So cool.

    40. Amazing. Was the leather hard to cut? I remember seeing some House of Holland boots for like $800 or something, similar strappy to these… but yours are much more street chic! xx

    41. This and you are so fantastic and creative! :)

    42. I’m not brave enough to attack leather!

    43. As usual, you totally bring the heat! This is such a cool, creative idea. Amazing!

    44. Thank you all for commenting! I can’t wait to see your versions. I’d love to see one with even finer shredding than I did. And for those afraid to try it–go for it! You can do it. And go-go boots are cheap and easy to come by. Like I said, I’ve had mine for years but haven’t worn them in forever, so I really had nothing to lose. Maybe you have a pair of boots that you haven’t given away yet, but never wear. Rip them up! And send me pictures or links. ;) xx

    45. Oh, and dreamsequins – I’ve never found leather to be difficult to cut, but I’ve only attempted on soft leather or a single layer of relatively thin leather. It could be difficult on very thick leather. I’ve never had a problem though. (I also once hacked a pair of boots into ankle booties.)

    46. I’m not brave enough to hack into leather either…. what kind of industrial scissors did you have to use?

    47. That is such a amazing idea. I love how they turned out.
      Off to get some boots
      Thanks for sharing the tutorial

    48. susie_bubble – I just used normal sharp sewing or all-purpose scissors. I recommend using soft leather or vegan materials. There’s no harm in hacking into a cheap pleather boot ;)

Mary – Thanks! Let me know when you finish yours. I’d love to see.

    49. I run a Lingerie website and I love the colours on your website. It has given me a lot of fresh ideas. Thanks. Check out my Valentines Day Lingerie Website if you got time – http://tinyurl.com/ycyjopf
