I Scattered Bleach All Over An Old Shirt

DIY bleached Limited shirt -- I love how this came out!
Target jeans that I wear all the time
Vintage passport bag
Turquoise ring, vintage Navajo
Copper ring, a Mediterranean restaurant with a little shop
Turquoise Aerosole shoes - Not sure these are the right shoes, but I liked how the turquoise looked with the coppery bleach spots.
.
I wore this out to a bar last Friday, and while I was there I overheard a girl ask her friends if they had a nail file because she had just broken a nail. I turned and told her to rub her fingernail against the grain of her jeans (an old trick of mine), and it worked! I felt like such a hero.

  1. When I saw on my Google reader that you had a new blog post. I thought that it would involve some purple pants. :-(

You are so freaking creative. That shirt looks pretty amazing.

Your nail tip is pretty handy. Never thought of doing that.

  2. ooooh, looks good! and aren’t you clever with your handy hints. I can’t remember what american coins look like, but Australian 5 and 10 cent coins have little ridges on the edges, so I use that when I don’t have a nail file!

  3. Marisol – Sorry, my dear… It’s been a ponytail and face mask kind of day. I promise I’ll post about the purple pants soon!

Ali – Quarters and dimes have ridges… I wonder if they’d work. Has anyone tried it?

  4. Your shirt turned out amazing! And OMG I so did not know you can file a nail with jeans – I want to do this right now!

PS. You know, the bank didn’t even mention my credit history? Doh! I’ve got a few credit-y things that might still work in my favour though…

  5. And gave it new life – you are fantastic )

  6. cute shirt! i giggled a bit at the “i felt like a hero”… although I would probably think you were a hero if you could find a remedy for my broken nail when i was out at a pub!

  7. I love the way the shirt came out too!

I use the 5 cent piece emergency nail file tip as well – I’ve never been able to come to the rescue with my advice though!

  8. Those are DEFINITELY the right shoes. It’s a great color combo. And what a fabulous tip about nail file emergencies! Filing that one back inside my brainz …

  9. Shirt looks amazing. I had a friend tie dye a heap of stuff lately and when she came to show it off it looked horrific. Maybe I should tell her to copy you instead.

Mind you, if you are going to tie dye baby clothes green, orange and purple without waiting for the dye to dry between colours, you have to expect somethings fairly horrific…

I have tried to file my nails on my jeans before, but my nails are super-tuff and just rent holes in denim. Now I just keep them really really short!

PS: I love that bag :)

  10. That t-shirt came out so good – I wish I could do the same!

Love your passport bag too…it’s so hard to find a cool one and that one definitely qualifies :-)

  11. OMG I’m copying that idea today!! Love love love it.

  12. Love the turquoise shoes, I think im gonna by myself some shoes tomorrow! Any tips on which?

  13. the shirt looks great! i love the file nail on jean trick. i actually just filed a pair of my jeans with a cheese grater to get a shredded look…..worked out pretty good but i probably won’t be able to do my nails now :-0

  14. oi – top tip re: nail file/jeans !! i would’ve never though of that… and i very rarely carry a nail file so that tip will be super handy.

ps: super cute job on the top.. and i like the shoes <3

  24. Miss Karen – Well, it’s not an emery board but it works in a pinch. ;) And as for your credit cards–don’t worry, it’s not detrimental. I do recommend that everyone go read Suze Orman’s Young, Fabulous, & Broke. She has amazing advice..

  29. you did a great job with this shirt, annie! I’ll have to try that sometime!

  30. Great job on the shirt. Oh yeah, that is a good trick. If you are not wearing jeans just lean over to your date (chances are he is) and file away. :)

  31. Cool shirt Annie!

  32. That shirt looks so great. It makes me want to try it too.
I am also a fan of aerosoles. I know heels look so great, but I am more of a flats girl, I like comfy shoes the best

    Laura,
    Wendy – Thanks! xox

Elizabeth – These are actually fairly steep but you can’t tell because they’re Aerosoles, so they’re very comfortable. Usually I get footaches on anything over 2 and a half inches. :]

BillyWarhol – I’m realllllllllly hoping for the best! And I will be celebrating like crazy if all goes well. xx

  35. Wow! Very cool shirt! I did that a few years back with spandex…I made pawprints all over them so that they would look like our school mascot pawprint for cross-country. Great to post this idea…and I love the far out purple spandex in your latest post.
    xx

…would you like to swap links? Your style is super snazzzzzzzzy! :D

  36. hello darling.
    how’s your weekend been?
i love that shirt. really great,

  37. Choubelle – Checked out yer blog, and yes, I will swap links. :)

ediot – Ah, my ears are still ringing from a club last night and I’m definitely wearing earplugs next time I go there, but it was fun! Thanks, doll xo

  38. good job on the tie die. I love the idea of sprinkling the bleach rather than the mess of rubber bands. It turned out really well. :)

  39. But how did you do it?! It looks like it was professionally done since all the drops look pretty consistent. I have to know how you did it!!! I spilled bleach on the hem of a dark blue cotton Topshop dress and I am about to make it into a rag. But because of this great idea of yours, I have new hope for the dress! HELP ME!

  40. Rachael – Thanks!

Topaz Horizon – I put a bit of bleach in an empty water bottle with a sippy top–you know what I’m walking about? The cap that pops up instead of screwing off… I wet the shirt and laid it flat, then zigzagged the bottle over it, letting droplets scatter out. I did it quickly without hesitation–swoosh swoosh swoosh. I hope that helps! :) Good luck!

  41. Aha!!! Ya, the sports bottle one! I thought you just splashed it on the shirt and I was thinking, “Wow, she can control those drops like crazy!” Grrrrreat idea! Will implement asap!

  42. I never saw this post!!!
I love how this shirt came out! The fit must’ve been hot to begin w/
who knew when one bleaches black, it comes out brown? I would’ve thought gray.

  43. I love when I can give someone a helpful random hint. It’s a great feeling. My favourite save-the-day hint is applying cigarette tobacco to a bee sting. The nicotine totally takes away the sting!

  44. Hi,this is really a elegant shirt,I like the damn good style and the tones.bill
