Yes, I Am Wearing A Fanny Pack
![]()
Here are a few suggestions for how to wear a fanny pack without looking like a nerdy tourist. Wear it:
- 1. With confidence.
2. As a drop waist belt on a dress.
3. Off to the side.
I had a fanny pack back in the early nineties. It was black with neon orange piping and I carried my lunch money in it. Oh yes. I don't have it anymore, but I did pick up this nice leather vintage one on eBay. It's a little more grown-up, probably. Not that it matters. I didn't put any lunch money in this one, or bar tab money. I actually wore it empty as a belt so it wouldn't be bulky. I was excited to carry another eBay find, this Asian bootleg messenger bag that says, "Minutemen, Meatpuppets, Descendants, Angst." It's a copy of a show flier. Those are all bands on the punk label SST Records.
I wore this to dive bar dance party that Benjamin helped deejay. Thank you to everyone who helped me win the headphones for him! xxox
- Lynn Ritchie dress
- Quartz (or amethyst?) necklace (see here)
- Vintage leather fanny pack - The strap really is kind of red-purplish like that.
- Probably bootleg SST Records show messenger bag + Morrissey pin
- Leather bracelet and assorted rings
- Blue socks from Target
- Personal vintage Doc Marten's - I wore boots because it was raining.

I think that fanny packs (or bumbags as we call them on the other side of the pond) are great. The leather ones are especially nice, they”re great at festivals when you”re dancing and need a hands-free bag. And off to the side. Definitely off to the side.
You definitely know how to wear them! I love your hair, looks really good in these pictures.
On you, it looks like anything BUT nerdy tourist. You”ve made me reconsider my opinion.
Also, the tree wallpaper makes my day so happy every time I see it. I”m so in love with it, it hurts.
We love Fanny Packs!!! You look super rad and love this outfit!!! Have a grrrrrrrrrrreat summer!

Fanny packs are freaking hard to pull off. That”s why you”ll never see me in one.
But I agree that off to the side does make it look better. Otherwise it reminds me of a tourist, a nerd, a baglady, or someone stuck in the 80”s/early 90”s.
I remember fanny packs. i used to have one in the 90”s as well. You”re pulliong your one off really well.
I think fanny packs are cool. But my mom thinks the opposite. Thanks for your comment. I love girly stuff.
You rock that fanny pack! Geek is the new chic, I wore socks with cuffed pants, and sandals.

I am glad you were able to win the headphones!!
You definitely make the fanny pack work! It looks great! I wonder why we call them Bum bags in the UK? haha.
Ha the name ”Fanny pack” also makes me laugh (means something different in the UK) we call them bum bags. I haven”t worn one for about 20 years but you are right they can look great and they are so practical.
Love this look, darling!
And your post title made me giggle!

cool bag!!!
Cute outfit!! I love your fanny pack!! It looks great!!
Haha. This is great! You make a fanny pack look so good.
Those are great tips. I never even thought to wear it as a drop waist belt.
Awesome!

Loving the black dress..
your attitude on these shots has worked out quite well

My dad used to make me wear a fanny pack when I went on school holidays! Hahaha, it was horrible, it was gray and really ugly. Yours is much more chic!
love your ”how to wear a fanny pack” tips. it”s so true. you”ve just got to wear it off to the side… and not look like a) a total tourist or b) a nerdy mathematician. i think it”s a great item and actually so useful. you”re wearing yours well! xx
Love that black dress and those boots. Great bum-bag. SarahD:)
P.S. Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog.:)
Layla – The tree paper is great, isn”t it? Unfortunately it has to come down soon! What you see is the only decent patch of it. The rest of the hallway is in literal tatters. It has to come down as part of our renovations. Such a shame! I love it too, but it”s really a mess.
Joy D. – Thank you. Benjamin is excited.
Style Eyes – What does fanny pack mean in the UK? Is it anything like fudge pack? That”s my best guess.
E V E R Y O N E – Thanks for the sweets! And that”s funny, I didn”t know they were called bum bags over there. I wonder why they can”t be called anything more dignified, like belt stachels or something. Fanny pack and bum bag both just sound silly.
Fanny packs are great for when you can”t be bothered with straps or, like me, you are occasionally paranoid about mugging and want to keep your belongings separate. I bought some leather ones on ebay and I”ve started customising them with studs and whatnot. I keep forgetting to blog about it though-watch this space!
haha! I loved my bum bag!! I think you could single-handedly bring them back miss spandex…i”m certainly considering!
Another great outfit hon, love the grungey vibe!

love this look darling. the dress is so nice- and i want a pair of docs too!
x
Work that fanny!
This works. Because leather versions of things always work.
This is fabulous. I love the tote, oh my gosh! I always pick up vintage fanny packs when I can find them. They sell really well in my etsy shop. I found a cool black leather one that I had to keep for myself, but I forgot about it until now. Hmm, I should either wear it or sell it! xoxo
i love combat boots and dress….perfect mix between feminine style and badassery
hi annie, i love that bootleg bag and have been looking all over the interweb for it. only found a chinese website and i cant read chinese
now i know if i were you i would want a bunch of other people out there with my awesome bag, but if you could give me any tips on hunting down another one id appreciate it
Mary – I found mine on eBay. Do an advanced eBay search between $0.99 – $14.99 on Asian countries only. Try Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong… It will take some searching but eBay is your best best, and narrowing your search to cheap bags in Asian countries will help. No search term, because the listings I’ve seen aren’t marked with the “Minutemen, etc..” or SST, they just say something like “tote bag.” Good luck! x
Mary – P.S. Just to clarify, no search term but use the handbag category.
thank you so much!
I never tried buying stuff @ ebay, was too scared to buy one because it might be a scam or the item might not look like in the picture or not in good condition. Looks to me that the ones you bought are in really good condition, how do you scrutinize items sold on ebay. Would love to have your tips and advice, thank you!
Love the looks! Those dress look like a fashion statement of 80′s. I like it. I am looking forward for more of this.
